Trouble Shooting

The turbocharger problem analysis can help you determine a turbocharger problem. When having turbocharger problems, it is essential that you think of the turbo as a part of the complete engine. There could be more at stake than you might think at first. By going through the turbocharger problem analysis step by step, there is a great chance that you can discover the real problem.

Check your turbo


Once you have disconnected the tube between the air filter and the turbocharger, you will be able to feel how much play there is in the rotor. Excessive wear and tear of the turbo are indicated if the radial play in the rotor is so large that the wheels rub against the housing. We advise you to replace the turbo immediately.

1. ascending and descending turbo sound

cause 1: blocked air inlet from the air filter to the turbo.
cause 2: blocked air supply to the turbo.
cause 3: compressor side of the turbo fouled

2. black smoke from exhaust
cause 1: air leak between the inlet manifold and cylinder head.
cause 2: air leak between turbo and inlet manifold.
cause 3: air leak in the duct between the air filter and turbo
cause 4: blocked air inlet from the air filter to turbo
cause 5: blocked air inlet from the turbo to inlet manifold
cause 6: blocked air supply to the turbo.
cause 7: blocked catalytic converter
cause 8: blocked exhaust manifold.
cause 9: blocked exhaust pipe or silencer
cause 10: blocked inlet manifold
cause 11: blocked or defective intercooler
cause 12: camshaft and/or timing belt adjusted incorrectly
cause 13: compressor side of the turbo fouled.
cause 14: engine wear and tear
cause 15: fuel pump or atomizers adjusted incorrectly
cause 16: leakage of exhaust gas between the cylinder head and exhaust manifold.
cause 17: leakage of exhaust gas between the exhaust manifold and turbo
cause 18: worn out piston rings and/or cylinders

3. blue smoke from exhaust.
cause 1: air leak between the inlet manifold and cylinder head
cause 2: air leak between turbo and inlet manifold.
cause 3: bearing housing of turbo clogged or charred
cause 4: blockage of oil drainage channel
cause 5: blocked air inlet from the air filter to the turbo. 
cause 6: blocked air supply to the turbo
cause 7: compressor side of the turbo fouled.
cause 8: engine wear and tear
cause 9: poor ventilation of sump.
cause 10: worn out piston rings and/or cylinders.

4. engine goes into emergency running.
cause 1: atomizers incorrectly adjusted or broken.
cause 2: control rings of variable turbine geometry.
cause 3. defective turbo pressure sensor inlet manifold 
cause 4: soot deposit on variable turbine geometry.

5. engine power reduces
cause 1: air leak between the inlet manifold and cylinder head
cause 2: air leak between turbo and inlet manifold.
cause 3: air leak in the duct between the air filter and turbo
cause 4: blocked air inlet from the air filter to the turbo.
cause 5: blocked air inlet from the turbo to inlet manifold
cause 6: blocked air supply to the turbo.
cause 7: blocked catalytic converter.
cause 8: blocked exhaust manifold
cause 9: blocked exhaust pipe or silencer
cause 10: blocked inlet manifold
cause 11: blocked or defective intercooler.
cause 12: camshaft and/or timing belt adjusted incorrectly.
cause 13: compressor side of the turbo fouled
cause 14: engine wear and tear
cause 15: excess pressure valve in turbo stuck.
cause 16: fuel pump or atomizers adjusted incorrectly. 
cause 17: leakage of exhaust gas between the cylinder head and exhaust manifold
cause 18: leakage of exhaust gas between the exhaust manifold and turbo.
cause 19: malfunctioning wastegate
cause 20: vacuum turbine turbo broken
cause 21: worn out piston rings and/or cylinders.

6. excessive oil use
cause 1: air leak between the inlet manifold and cylinder head.
cause 2: air leak between turbo and inlet manifold 
cause3: bearing housing of turbo clogged or charred
cause 4: blockage of oil drainage channel
cause 5: blocked air inlet from air filter to turbo
cause 6: blocked air supply to the turbo
cause 7: compressor side of the turbo fouled
cause 8: engine wear and tear
cause 9: poor ventilation of sump
cause 10: worn out piston rings and/or cylinders

7. oil leak from the compressor side.
cause: air leak between the inlet manifold and cylinder head.

8. oil leak from the turbine side
cause1: air leak between turbo and inlet manifold
cause 2: air leak in the duct between the air filter and turbo.
cause 3: the bearing housing of turbo clogged or charred.
cause 4: blockage of oil drainage channel.
cause 5: blocked air inlet from the air filter to turbo
cause 6: blocked air supply to the turbo.
cause 7: compressor side of the turbo fouled.
cause 8: engine wear and tear
cause 9: poor ventilation of sump
cause 10: worn out piston rings and/or cylinders

9. power loss in high gear
cause 1: atomizers incorrectly adjusted or broken.
cause 2: blocked catalytic converter
cause 3: blocked exhaust pipe or silencer.
cause 4: defective air measuring equipment.
cause 5: defective turbo pressure sensor inlet manifold
cause 6: EGR valve fouled

10. power loss of warm engine
cause 1: atomizers incorrectly adjusted or broken.
cause 2: blocked catalytic converter
cause 3: fuel pump or atomizers adjusted incorrectly.
cause 4: vacuum turbine turbo broken

11. turbo makes a noise
cause 1: air leak between the inlet manifold and cylinder head
cause 2: air leak between turbo and inlet manifold
cause 3: air leak in the duct between the air filter and turbo
cause 4: blocked air inlet from the air filter to the turbo.
cause 5: blocked air supply to the turbo
cause 6: compressor side of the turbo fouled.
cause 7: leakage of exhaust gas between the cylinder head and exhaust manifold
cause 8: leakage of exhaust gas between the exhaust manifold and turbo
cause 9: leakage of exhaust gas between turbo and exhaust pipe.

12. turbo pressure too high
cause 1: control rings of variable turbine geometry
cause 2: excess pressure valve in turbo stuck
cause 3: soot deposit on variable turbine geometry

13. underpressure inlet manifold too high
cause 1: excess pressure valve in turbo stuck.

14. underpressure inlet manifold too low
cause 1: blocked catalytic converter
cause 2: defective air measuring equipment
cause 3: defective turbo pressure sensor inlet manifold
cause 4: EGR valve fouled
